if this isn't massively big government, nothing is

Woke up to this on the front page of today's paper. A proposed law by Texas State Senator Dan Patrick (Republican-7th District) will make it mandatory for women seeking abortions to have a sonogram and listen to the fetal heartbeat.

Patrick has been proposing laws of this nature for years. His 2009 law was watered down, mandating that women be informed of their right to the procedures but allowing them to opt out.

His "current proposal allows women to avert their eyes."

It's unclear whether women can refuse the fetal monitor heartbeat.

Really? A bunch of stuff shirts in the Texas lege are gonna allow me to look away? What would they have us do? Put our heads in a vice and force us to look? Stick plugs in our ears against our will? Sounds a little clockwork orangey to me.

And what happened to the Republican rallying cry, Keep government off my back! I don't understand how my back is off limits but my uterus is fair game.

What a disgusting proposal...what an arrogance ..a supreme insult to women if I have ever heard of one.

Must go for a big walk and calm down..

It's a conundrum all right--as so many Republican proposals seem to be to me.

As someone who believes even the tiniest "blob" Megan talks about is life, I can also say that it's a tough issue for everyone. I'll be staying tuned!

'K so my mother - yeah... not sure your comment box is big enough but you know, one day, with a warm sunset and a bottle of chilled something we might have the time and inclination.

Anyway... this guy really thinks this might get passed? I always wonder what would happen if the Western world was still a patriachy but men GOT pregnant. Oh to eavesdrop on that alternative reality.

Every time the lege is session, I start my days by yelling at the paper. My husband is considering cancelling our subscription until they all leave town.

It really is amazing how the republicans want less government involvement in people's lives but have no problem making demands on a very intimate part of a woman's life.

Wow. And speaking of big government, who is supposed to pay for that?

seriously? they really think that is going to prevent abortion? like we are so stupid and unfeeling that we don;t know it's a potential baby? we know, guys, but there are a whooole bunch of reasons that having that baby is a bad idea, sometimes. and they also think that preventing women who want an abortion form having one is going to result in happy, well adjusted children not living in poverty? arseholes. (rant over)

The problem begins when you try to apply intelligence and logic to the ideas and beliefs behind these proposals.

If men had babies, this would never be an issue. Never.

Wasn't there another state that wanted this recently? Utah, maybe? But I'm all for it!
IF those GOPs line up and adopt all those unwanted babies themselves, that is.

Ohhh my god... just felt my blood pressure hit the ceiling. The fact that these flaccid old bastards think they have any right to say what I can do with MY body makes me absolutely livid. Oh the tirade I feel like going on right now! But... I won't. Can you imagine the miserable, desperate lives of some of the babies that would be born as a result of passing that?
