leaps better

Philadelphia, PA

Thanks for all of the well wishes, bloggy friends. I'm not sure if this cold was a mild one, but it was certainly short lived. Maybe it was because I took my own advice, for once, and drank gallons of water. Or maybe all of those zinc lozenges I was sucking on day and night actually worked. Or maybe I was just exaggerating my symptoms all along because of all the peace and quiet perks.

But, the why-come isn't so important. It's the feeling leaps better that is. And relieved this cold did not turn into three weeks worth of annoying hacking cough, like they usually do.

One funny thing that happened during my woe-is-me convalescence. I switched from my usual habit of drinking decaff-mocha-coffee to green tea.

For the past few years, at least, a cup of green tea held about as much appeal for me as a jump into an ice cold lake. But I started drinking it because it was lighter than my coffee-candy concoction, and, bonus points, healthier.

Now that I'm pretty close to back to normal, I've started adding vanilla flavored soy milk to my green tea, something that sounded horrible to me three weeks ago but now tastes reallllly good.

Weird. Tastes come and go for me. I'm used to that. But this is a big switch. Right now it's all I think about. Heating up water for my daily two three four cups of green tea.

How about you, reader? Any radical shifts in food or drink obsessions preferences lately?

I want to be a tea drinker, I really do, I even practice sometimes, but I never get good at it. It's dressed up coffee all the way. I've been craving tacos for weeks, after not caring about them at all. I've made them every week since the beginning of the year. Really strange.

I'm glad you are feeling better and no lingering cough is great!

I love my coffee, but, my husband has switched to tea for acid reasons, so sometimes I drink tea with him. I put vanilla creamer and splenda in my tea and I actually like it okay. I still want my coffee.

Tammy -- that's exactly what I would have said just one month ago: I want to be a tea drinker. And now, strangely, I am!

snugglebug -- I tried vanilla creamer (mixed with the soy) this afternoon and YUM!

I've been on a chili kick since the first cool day of fall. Chili black beans, chili chicken, tamale soup, enchilada casserole, beef chili, chili peppers and eggs, huevos rancheros with chili beans...you get the picture. It's a good thing I've got an inexhaustible supply of roasted Hatch chilis in the freezer. I'm going to eat heat until it's hot outside again.

I am loving wheat products...I can't even eat white bread anymore.

Kathleen -- I've gotta try Hatch chili's one of these days. Almost too ashamed to admit that I'm not sure if I've ever eaten them but I know for sure I've never cooked with them.

kristi -- Except leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches. That's the One time a year I crave white bread.

Urgh I don't like the sound of that at all - but then you didn't a week or so back, so perhaps if I get a cold, my tastes will change too?

I can't think of anything that I eat or drink that is new. I have pretty well switched away from bread. I cut that out in January along with alcohol. I went back to red wine at the beginning of Feb and am loving that but I've felt no desire to return to bread. Odd really because I used to love it. I probably still would if I tried it but I have no urge to. My stomach is all flat too for the lack of wheat - so perhaps that is what keeps me from it.

Hot chocolate - made with milk and chocolate syrup. And laced with peppermint schnapps. Because I'm tired of 3+ feet of snow where we aren't used to the white stuff....

I went through the green tea fixation for a while! I still try to drink it as often as I can.

I hate certain things I hate, then I get a random craving for it and all of a sudden love it. I've done it with red wine and tomatoes...

oh i'm so torn here...on one hand, i drink green tea every day...hot, cold...doesn't matter. I have loose tea, tea bags, and i even have the "true" green tea that is used in tea ceremonies (the powdered type that you "stir" with the bamboo brush). I have discovered a taste for 'macha lattes' (Starbucks makes a great one)..even the green tea ice cream is starting to taste good, but.....
i have realized that i have been here too long..the idea of putting anything in green tea (sugar, milk, fruit, etc) just makes me shiver. don't. touch. the. green. tea. :-) I need to come "home"!! :-)
that said...i'm not really changing what i eat, but how i eat....need to stop the 'driving home car snack' time i found myself enjoying too often.

oh..by the way...if you are interested in trying some of that powdered green tea...let me know...i know people who know people...you know? :-D

Had green tea and vanilla almond milk this afternoon. Thank you!

I love green tea -- unsweetened, actually! I drink coffee as well with a bit of milk and straight sugar. I gave up sugar this week (wish me well) except for the teaspoon in my morning coffee. So far so good.

I drink iced green tea in the summer like a maniac but during winter I have to have coffee. My latest coffee obsession is the nonfat dirty latte. I would never have thought to add something vanilla flavored to hot green tea. I'm going to try it!

Glad you're feeling better.

BTW - what kind of green tea are you brewing?

I'm also obsessing a little about the Oscars. Will you come over and take my poll?

Jason, as himself said...

I also want to be a tea drinker, especially green tea. I guess it is just a matter of experimenting until I find a way that I like it.

But I have this caffeine problem that I must satisfy. Tea just doesn't have enough for me.

That's bad.

I'm happy to hear you're feeling better.
