My favorite way to relax on a hot August day is to be fully submerged in a spring fed river, feet floating in front of me, collecting smooth, flat, round river stones with which to balance tiny rock pyramids while drinking snorkely-slinky.* It sounds easy, but after a few snorkely-slinkies? Perilous.
Reader, how do you like to relax?
*The drinking alcohol part is optional. Unless it's a typical day at home when a spring fed river is not readily available, in which case, the drinking alcohol is mandatory.
*Oh, but wait. You're probably following the (*) to find out what a snorkely-slinky is. It's my personal favorite mixed cocktail of Svedka, club soda and cranberry. Or better, when I'm uber organized, prickly pear juice, in which case, I should be calling it, snorkely-prickly.

Photo says it all...I've never done exactly that to relax, but your pic lets me think I have. I'm into ac, my window seat and a book. Maybe I should go do something and relax?
Relax? What is that? The closest I get to this is when I sneak away and read on the patio at a nearby Starbucks. I suppose I'm just living that period of my life that most of us experience at one point when the young kids run the show.
In the bathtub, hot water, bath salts are a must, closed eyes. Deep breathing. Or by slowly eating great chocolate and other sensual sweets, including port.
margo -- book, window seat and ac? very relaxing, yes.
cheri -- PJs and movie rentals. one of my favorites, too.
rDad -- a few years ago, that snapshot in the river would not have been possible. you'll get here one day, too. kids can certainly take the relax out of relaxation day.
heather -- a relaxing bath with yummy chocolate. I can love that too.
The spring fed river sounds lovely, but they're a little low and slow these days.
The traditional book and hammock works great for me.
prof J -- you're so right. my feet are floating courtesy of a rock dam we (and others before us) built.
jenn -- love the hammock idea. I don't have one of those. have the trees, used to have a hammock but I think we sold it at a garage sale years ago. what were we thinking? other than failing to realize our toddlers would grow up and allow us more free time.
That's some top notch rock stacking. I'm a watergirl so this looks close to perfect for me. But, the hammock w/book scenario is also gold.
lee -- thank you. it has taken years of practice to perfect my technique. I believe I'm ready for the big leagues now.
Yesterday I was so wound up before my date with Mr. Fine that I could have used some floating-on-the-river relaxation. Mostly when I really relax it's in the shade of a huge tree on a lazy day, on a quiet dock with a friendly breeze, relaxing in front of a fireplace with a warm drink . . . lots of outlets. I just wish I had time for one of those.
My favorite way of relaxing? Being on my computer with either a glass of red wine or coffee, reading my favorite blogs! Right now I'm drinking Cab, so I can't say the typos won't be there. But thank you for your endless source of entertainment.
I'm new to your blog and clearly late to celebrate national relaxation day. Damn.
I don't think I ever really relax, or I can't remember really relaxing which is worrisome. So when I know I need to relax, I go for being out--I have a midday nap.
Relaxing for me always involves a book.
fragrant -- they all sound good to me, but especially the shade tree.
andrea -- ditto to the blogging. when I got back from my relaxing vacation, I was really excited about plopping on the couch and catching up on blogs.
elizabeth -- never too late to relax. welcome and thanks for stopping by!
laura -- napping works for some, not for me. I usually feel too fuzzy headed the rest of the day.
imom -- I usually do my reading at night, before bed. I'd like to change that.
oh that sounds lovely.
Sunday morning at home, waffles, great coffee, the newspaper, no phone calls, no computer.
Great photo and your drink sounds frothy enough for floating. I might go more peach bellini except that it's hard to plug in a blender in the river...
I always laugh when I see the prompt to "tell me about your mother"! My mom is the opposite of relaxation, which makes living with her ... tense! (Only three more days though.) Love the pic and the drink and the rocks. I'll second the relxing couch with a book and a glass of wine. Or in winter - bed.
