have you got the beat?

Merlot Mom asked for song suggestions to help get her exercising. I left a list of some of the songs loaded on my mp3 player, but I didn't have anything very recent to offer.

Then I heard this song on the radio today. It fits my bill - fast beat and .. well .. I just like it:

Shake It by Metro Station. Follow the link and listen, here.
Below is my list, in no particular order. Though, about 10 minutes in, I like to skip forward to Salt n Pepa's Push It ... or Shakira's Hips Don't Lie ... because they get me moving. Then when it's time to slow it down, I skip to John Lee Hooker's Catfish Blues.

So, if you see me on the stairmaster, chances are I'm listening to one of these songs. Without my ear plugs, I can't seem to tread above a slow crawl. And time draggggggggggggs.

Can anyone add to my list?

Shakira: Hips Don't Lie
Jet: Are you gonna be my girl
Will Smith: Get jiggy wit it
Everything But (?): Missing (remix)
Marky Mark: Good vibrations
Stevie Ray Vaughn: Love Struck Baby
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Scar Tissue
Janet Jackson: Nasty
Salt 'n Pepa: Pump up the Jam
Salt 'n Pepa: Push It
M.C. Hammer: U Can't Touch This
Run DMC: Walk this way
Tag Team: Whoomp. There is is.
Yaz with Alison Moyet: Only You (longtime favorite song)
La Bouche: Be my lover
Jellyhead: Crush
Black Box: Everybody everybody
Right Said Fred: Too sexy for my love
Cece Peniston: Finally (club mix)
Fun Factory: I wanna be with you
2 Unlimited: Get ready for this
Kylie Minogue: Can't get you out of my head
John Lee Hooker: Catfish Blues
Fine Young Cannibals: She drives me crazy
Robin S: Show me love (club mix)
Harold Melvin: The Love I lost
Santana: Smooth

I think you stole my workout tape! Haha. some others:

Mrs. Robinson (has a great beat)
Tim McGraw "how bad do you want it" starts slowly but is great inspiration for getting it done.
Rascall Flatts "feels like today"
Holding out for a hero (shrek - originally Footloose)

I'm with you - I can't workout without music.

Ok..you asked for it. I let my gf load my ipod shuffle (PERFECT for workouts)and I never knew the titles and artists to some of the songs but for YOU I googled them all (which I am glad because I like most of them). It is full of hip-hop and very hard rock...most of it a little vulgar (ok...a lot):

Fifty Cent – In da club (Nine inch nails closer remix)
Weezer – Beverly Hills
Marilyn Manson – Beautiful People
Panic at the Disco - The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage
BRMC (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club) – Whatever Happened to My Rock N Roll
Beastie Boys – The Negotiation Limerick File
Panic at the Disco – I write sins not tragedies
Killers - All these things that I’ve Done
Nine Inch Nails – Closer
Nine Inch Nails – The hand that feeds
The Roots – The seed
Jem – 24 hours
The Strokes – Last night
Eve 6 – Shimmer
Green Day – Minority
Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sitta
Daft Punk – Harder, Better, Stronger, Faster
My Chemical Romance –I’m not okay
Outkast – Hey Ya
Puff Daddy – Come with me
Run DMC – It’s Tricky

I have a special "running" folder on itunes that I load onto my iPod when I go out for my run. If I forget and go out with another folder on there I am often 5 minutes slower doing my run. Amazing the power of music to push me along.

I love running to Bodyrockers "I Like the Way you Move" that always has me shaking my hair and waving my arms about and looking stupid. But there are others that are surprisingly good, Whitesnake's "Here I go again" is good and Golden Earring's "Radar Love". None are songs I like but they are great for running to, oh and ELO's "Mr Blue Sky" that always makes me smile and look up at the sky and run into trees and the like.

I love all of the songs on your list, but that's my driving playlist. When I run, I play club techno music. I know it sounds insane, but when I go for a run, I need music that gets my blood pounding through my veins and takes my head on a trip of its own. I play songs by Darude, Scooter, Blank & Jones, and DJ Tiesto. Believe me, it's embarrassing, and that's the only time I listen to that stuff!

girl next door -- "holding out for hero" is bonnie tyler, I love her voice. thanks for the suggestions. I'll give a listen.

margo -- afro celts, that sounds interesting. thanks!

jck -- machines aren't my favorite, either, but with earplugs and a book to read, I can go a long time.

agent x -- wow! I've hit the jackpot. muchas gracias. right off the top, Mr. Brightside? I heard it on radio but didn't know who it was by or what the name of the song was. so that's a keeper.

helena -- yes, that was a favorite CD. a lot of miles jogging logged on that one.

mental p -- I had a listen (thank you, youtube) and good choice, great beat! The name of the song is "Without Me" for those who want to go looking for it.

rb -- " "I Like the Way you Move" new one for me.. I like it! thanks : ) And I'm a big fan of ELO. Listened to that album for hours and hours in my early high school years.

blognut -- I'm not above techno. A few of my workout songs would fall under that category, I think. Jellyhead, LaBouche are two, if I remember right. Like you, I would listen to this in few settings. Would I dance to it? Yes. Entertain or relax with it? No.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Feel free to drop by in the future as new ideas come to mind.

Jason, as himself said...

Almost any other Kylie Minogue songs work well!

And, have you tried the new Britney Spears stuff?

OMG! I'm thrilled to have started this. Can't wait to listen to the songs. I also found songs from John Legend and when it's time to slow down, the Moldy Peaches (from Juno).

I really like Metro Station (Shake It) There's a voice in there that is so like Robert Smith's of The Cure, it's uncanny. You've once again inspired me and I've done a kookie lil thang on my blog to join in.

Nice to be intro-ed to Merlot Mom too!

Thanks old girl!

jason -- kylie m. is another good example. wouldn't listen to her otherwise. but I do love her disco-esque beats when I'm trying to get my heartrate up. no, havn'et tried the latest brittney. need to check with my kids, one or all of them like her and might have some pointers.

merlot mom -- and I'm so glad you did. I have been trying to cultivate snappy tunes but had completely dropped the ball til I read your post.

alison -- yes, I really like the voice of one of the lead singers .. and you're right, sounds like that guy from the Cure. One of the songs on my player is the one he did a remake of .. "Oh Where oh where can my baby be?" I think "Last Kiss" is the name. Great remake. And yeah, I love his voice.

Allison Moyet? I hadn't thought of her in AGES!! I think I played her tape until it just fell apart!!

And please...Holding Out For a Hero? That is MY signature karaoke song ANYtime we go out!! 'nuf said.

I'm not one for disco-esque or rap music in general, but...I'm all for Linkin' Park for when I'm walking. Right now, my "music of the month" is 3 Doors Down...they rock..I have to be careful because I also tend to sing along!!
How about Fall Out Boy? They are good, too.
Now, I'm going to google Fine Young Cannibals, too because i used to listen to them all the time and canNOT for the life of me find the CD!!

and yeah...that picture is a killer!! :-D

I've been dancing to "I'm bringing Sexy back" every night before dinner as motivation to not go back for seconds. My kids think I am ridiculous...but it works for me!
