the maroon and the orange face off

Deb of etc, etc, etc has an affinity for a unique combination: Texas and flamingos.

Today, while the pie crust was chilling and the turkey was basting, Sam and I took a short ride to capture one of Austin's most unique traditions: Flamingos on parade.

We spotted a rare flock of maroon flamingos:

And then a flock of orange:

And then when we back up a bit:

we see that it's not just college athletes who have a passion for squaring off on a field of green:

Complete with a referee,

a penguin to insure impartiality:

And Deb? If these pictures are making you yearn for Texas, pack your bags. I'll have the perfect vehicle waiting at the airport:

The Flamingo Express.

Okay, enough of birds and blogging. Time to get back to the real game.

Gig 'em, Aggies!

My husband's a tea-sip, and I'm a gator, so we have interesting football conversations around here. It's going to get ugly if the Rose Bowl turns out to be a UT-UF match-up for the first time ever.

When I tuned in here today, I thought for a moment I was seeing Key West. Someone is doing their bit to Keep Austin Weird, God bless 'em. Where, where, where???

Surely, as an Austinite, you meant Hook 'em Horns?

We're in NYC for the holidays but managed to see a bit of the game. The Aggies played a scary-good passing game. It was enough to unsettle our Sushi-Thanksgiving repast.

I know nothing about college football rivalries, but I'm sure this will mean something to you.

I went to a funeral for a friend who grew up in Austin, but went to A&M. His sons are named Bryan, Kyle and Austin Matthew. I hear his daughter barely escaped being named Aggie.

Kathleen -- The flamingos are courtesy of Pots and Plants Garden Center, Bee Caves Rd and 360.

And yes, the Aggies looked great last night, very nearly sawing those horns off. Next year!

Jenn - Hilarious. Their planets align on Thanksgiving Day!

I have long held the belief that Americans are stark raving bonkers...

...about football, that is. I just don't get the attraction of watching overgrown men trying to kill each other over a little pointy ball.

Ah well. If you get this much enjoyment from it, more power to you! ;)

Hope you had a terrific Turkey Day!

Oh. My. God.
Call the travel agent, I'm there. I am so thankful for great friends who help feed this obsession that I have....Texas, football and flamingos....the trifecta of fun this morning!!
(Seriously....I am smiling so incredibily big right now....unbelievable!!!)
You and Jenn have definitely given me enough warm fuzziness to last a very long time!!
I now take back all Aggie jokes I have ever told!

I love driving by that intersection. Always a bright spot in my day. Almost as good as seeing the tower lit in glorious orange.

Thanks for the location. I'm going as soon as we get back, hoping the teams are still up.

Ah well...we did our best! At least we didn't shame ourselves as predicted. Gig 'Em, indeed!

at first glance I thought they were real flamingos. Hilarious

I thought they were real too, I figured a find like that would shoot to the top of social media. Fake were cool too though ;)

This is why I can't be a Texan: I can't even feign an interest in football.

But I have big enthusiasm for YOU!

I know this has something to do with my Catholic upbringing but in that first pic of the ref penguin, I thought it was a Blessed Mother statue that someone had painted. Obviously, I have not had enough wine tonight! Oh, I am partial to the orange flamingoes-not for any particular reason except they are orange.
